Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I loved how much I learned and doing stuff I had never done before.

What I wish was different

I wish there was clearer communication about expectations.

Advice

Don’t go completely out of your comfort zone. Stay in enough that you can complete a project, but go out enough that you’re still learning new things.

What I liked

Lots of resources, events and perks. Had several mentors to guide me through the process and help me become a more confident software engineer.

What I wish was different

Microsoft needs to put in more effort to hire women and minorities on certain teams. Though overall diversity has improved at Microsoft over the years, certain teams are extremely binary and lacking any sort of diversity.

Advice

Don't be afraid to be honest about how you're feeling, feedback is valuable to those higher up than you and will help others have a better experience in the future.

Cloud Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

There are internship activities at a Microsoft-wide level and also within the organization, so for me it was in Cloud Sourcing and Supply Chain. This means that there are unlimited opportunities to network with leaders, hear from inspiring speakers, and create relationships with fellow interns. Within my organization, it was really evident that the entire team, from the leaders to the employees, values the work of the interns. They gave us meaningful projects that have tangible business impacts, showed interest in understanding our projects, and provided help and suggestions in the development of our work. I really appreciated this and it left me with a great understanding of the company culture and values.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

It can be overwhelming to realize that you need to understand the processes and ins and outs of the business all while completing a project that not only depends on the understanding of that information but also adds value to the business all within 12 weeks. Know that full-time employees aren't expected to grasp a full understanding of the entire business until at least 9 months into the job - so do the best you can and don't worry if you don't know everything!

Reception

June 2018 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

The staff are amazing. Everyone on campus is open, inviting, and willing to help you succeed however they can. There are parties, events, and tons of free food. You learn in a fun and exciting way that helps you branch out. Not to mention the ERGs (Employee Resource Groups)! Whatever your hobbies are, your passions, your interests, your culture: there is an ERG for you. From Women @ Microsoft, GLEAM (LGBTQ+), Asian ERG, Blacks at Microsoft, Soccer Club, Coding Club, Board Games, and more...there is a way to be support, meet other people, and have fun on campus!

What I wish was different

I wish I had realized earlier that it is not a regular company. It is modern and is exactly what I would expect and then some.

Advice

Don't be afraid to dive in. This is a company where you can fully express yourself and your ideas. Take advantage of that, learn more about yourself and your skills. Everyone here is here to help you make steps to your future.
