Piper Sandler

Equity Sales & Trading Intern

May - July 2023 • Greenwich, CT

What I liked

The team was incredibly supportive of our learning of new subjects and our desire to create connections. We were given full discretion to pursue what we thought was best for us.

What I wish was different

I wish I had received more projects; I would not have completed as many projects as I did if it weren't for my initiative to ask for projects. Other than that, the experience was meant to be a learning space for all interns, which didn't complement to well with the fact that I had learned enough about the industry and team to pursue tangible tasks.

Advice

Go into internships with a level of initiative that enables you to define your own path and create your own projects.

What I liked

Loved the close team members I was working with and the amount of exposure/responsibility I got while working over the summer.

What I wish was different

I think the hours were a little long sometimes, but not out of the range of what I was expecting. Not too many things that I wish would have been different truthfully.

Advice

I think starting off the summer strong is one of the most important things you can do to set the tone and habits you're going to carry with you. Also taking advantage of having time around your MD's, VP's and Associates is really important so ask them to grab coffee or just connect throughout the summer if you can and get as much advice as you can (also come prepared with what you've been working on and genuinely be interested in those projects and the notes they may have about them).

more exposure to certain sectors of interest

Advice

make sure you have a genuine interest. It's very worthwhile but the hours are long. They'll go by fast if you like what you do and who you're working with

The team I worked on was incredibly helpful and resourceful. I was exposed to live deal teams and gained invaluable experience.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

The work is challenging and interesting. I could not ask for a better place to begin my career. It is in my opinion the best industry to start your career, whether you are looking to stay in finance long term, run a start up, get your MBA, or any other business/finance related field.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

If you are not willing to put in the effort to network and are not willing to work 80-100 hours a week in order to invest in your future then investment banking is not for you. So make sure that you are picking an industry for the right reasons and are willing to do the work necessary to succeed.

Advice

If you don’t know how to do something, you must ask questions. Asking questions is how the full-time employees know you care about what you’re doing.
