Lawrence University

Student Researcher

June - August 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved the freedom and flexibility of doing summer research. It was a good challenge to work independently and alongside my professor

What I wish was different

I wish there were more students doing research in the math department! I would have loved to have a larger group of peers to share my progress with.

Advice

I would advise any one who’s interested in summer research to actively pursue it by reaching out to professors and inquiring about opportunities in their department.

Lawrence University Research Fellow

June - September 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I liked the independence it gave me. I was able to come in on my own time to complete my work and that I worked on a project that was fine.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you’re going into research go in with an open mind. Your project you are working on it could work, it could not work and it could give you results you weren’t expecting. All of those outcomes are valid results as you’re learning something. Working on a project without knowing what I’m supposed to be getting was frustrating but having an open mind allowed me to change my perspective.

Summer Assistant Researcher

June - September 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I really liked being exposed to what research is like as an undergrad. I enjoyed having the supervision and direction of my professor while still having an independent research project to do. I enjoyed gaining new skills in the lab and learning how to better use different technology. Learning the many techniques for my data collection for my research was an amazing experience.

What I wish was different

I just wished it lasted longer because I enjoyed it so much and research is a long journey. It takes trial and error to answer certain questions and to work towards an answer. 10 weeks just isn’t enough time time!

Advice

Don’t be afraid to apply to research. Apply to a professors research whose research you genuinely like. Ask upperclassmen questions about their day to day experience and what research with that professor was like.

Student researcher

June - September 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to use different software to design curriculum. I now have skills using Moodle and Audacity that can be applied to other positions in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure to the research. I was working 40 hours a week, but it didn’t feel like my advisor had given me a concrete plan of what I should be working on. I think I would have accomplished more if we had collaborate more and established goals and a plan from the very beginning of the internship.

Student Researcher

June - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved having a one-on-one collaboration with my professor/research advisor. I learned a lot and I was able to make connections with a lot of other young researchers who were also in my field.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I loved the experience.

Advice

If you're interested in doing research, be prepared to be pretty independent in solving problems as they come up (as they indefinitely will during research).

Summer Faculty Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved the impact on the community my research had. I also loved working with other dedicated psychology students and faculty.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gone somewhere outside of Appleton and Wisconsin. I also wish they would have advertised that researchers were receiving free housing.

Advice

Approach research with 100% enthusiasm and do not be discouraged when things do not work out the way you think they will. Eventually they will work out and if you do not like what you are doing, you have learned what you do not want to do with the rest of your life. It was only a summer and not years spent doing something you do not like.

Program Assistant for FAI

August - September 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved being able to socialize with the incoming freshmen and getting to meet a lot of them.

What I wish was different

Maybe that the freshmen need a little more help? A lot of them were on top of their things so I felt a little unneeded? Welcomed but not always necessary.

Advice

You become one of the people the freshman come to trust so being available if you can is good since you never know when you might be needed at the spur of the moment.

Stockroom Attendant

June 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I learned hands on experience with chemistry and had different interactions with all sorts of chemicals.

What I wish was different

I worked the full 40 hours a week offer, and I got paid 8.25 an hour. I wish I had gotten another job along with this one to be able to save the maximum amount for the following school year.

Advice

Have fun and make the most of the extended amount of time that you have to be able to feel accomplished and satisfied with the opportunity given to you.

Annual Giving, Major and Planned Giving, and Development Operations Intern

June 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I like the work environment. They people that I work with are wonderful, and it has been a very positive experience working with them. I also like how I am able to work on a variety of projects from researching giving programs at other universities, to creating loyal to Lawrence letters, to updating the giving pages on the Lawrence University website.

What I wish was different

I don't really wish for anything different because this internship hasn't disappointed me in any way.

Advice

I would advise others to pace themselves well. I worked very efficiently early on, which put me in situations with less to do.j
