student researcher

June - August 2023 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

My research was on improving the Lawrence University "Intro to Physics"-type course - and help conduct research on improving these types of courses in general. I really enjoyed learning how to write Physics problems for students, tinkering with each in order to make it more effective towards students new to Physics. I also enjoyed the amount of revision on the introductory physics topics I got to do.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a bit more guidance and interaction between my instructor and me and my research partner. It was sometimes difficult to make sure a problem is well-written or

Advice

If one is looking to be a summer student researcher in the Physics Department in Lawrence University I would advise you...to be excited! The Physics Faculty is great in Lawrence University, helpful and understanding. You should expect to do a lot of work on your own or with your research partner. You may also get opportunities to practice presenting your research weekly - I suggest taking those opportunities to improve your ability in talking about your work, a very useful skill when looking for someone to sponsor your physics research.

Summer Lifeguard

June - August 2022 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

Unlike a typical summer pool or waterfront, the LU pool patrons are much older and far fewer. The experience was much less stressful than other summer lifeguarding experiences.

What I wish was different

At the start I wished for new equipment and more first aid supplies. My employer took care of that as soon as he could, though it seemed like the order took longer to arrive than made sense.

Advice

As I would advise for any job, make sure you’re getting plenty of rest at night. This is especially true for something like lifeguarding which requires you to be alert.

Communication Student Intern

June 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I have always been interested in the world of the cameras and how they can be used to tell stories. Working as a student intern for Communication department gives me the chance to practice telling interesting stories using the camera and through the editing in Premiere Pro. I have been thoroughly trained to use the camera along with the supporting gears (e.g., tripod, monopod, microphones, lenses, etc.) and to cut, edit colors, sounds, etc. to create an immersive experience for the audience, whether through photos or videos.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be shy to ask your advisor, or other faculty in your major field if there is work you can help with over the Summer! This was not a posted job, but something I obtained through asking my adviser if anyone in the History Department needed help!

Lawrence Student researcher

June - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I liked doing research with all of the other researchers. Even though I worked on my project alone, it was fun to be around other people and my friends. Cooking together and hanging our after a long day of research was fun

What I wish was different

I wish that I got more results done. I was supposed to get my project done in triplicate but only got one round

Advice

If you have the opportunity to do research here at Lawrence, take advantage of the opportunity! Not many undergrads get the chance to do research while getting their BA and Lawrence gives you the opportunity to do so. You can also use your research for your senior capstone if it interests you.

Clare Boothe Luce research student

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved getting to explore in a collaborative environment, at my own pace as long as I put in the time and effort, and seeing what I could discover and prove. It was wonderful to learn math in this way, without the structure of a class but with the support of professors and a fellow research student, and it totally changed my perspective on graduate school in math. I am more interested in grad school because of this experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

Students are required to give a talk sometime after the summer about their research. Prepare for this talk during the summer and don't leave it for later, because the term will get busy. I was glad for what I did in this regard but wish I had done a little more work on it before the school year started up.

Research Assistant

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed researching alongside a professor and upperclassmen for the first time. The schedule was flexible because it was online research (due to COVID).

What I wish was different

Even though it meant the schedule was flexible I wish I was able to work in person. I wish I could have been on campus for the resources and the shared experience.

Advice

I would recommend reaching out to professors you like and asking them if they have research opportunities. I think networking is one of the strongest, or, most reliable ways to get a job.

What I liked

There wasn't a huge amount of supervision and I was allowed to do my assigned work at my own pace.

What I wish was different

The management staff was pretty aggressive and confrontational sometimes.

Advice

It's a good way to make money as a student if you're not looking for a position that requires too much experience.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

Working with Dr. Hilt in the Lawrence University CARE Lab was as rewarding an experience as ever. This summer I got to take the lead on investigating my own research question, running analyses and interpreting the data myself, and writing up a report and poster. I was mentored throughout but it was overall a very self-motivated position, and resulted in my research being accepted for presentation at a conference later this year.

What I wish was different

The only issues were related to the nature of virtual/at-home work - limited access to resources and occasionally tech going wonky. Not being able to be in the lab and double check my data against our hard copies was unfortunate, but a necessity due to the 2020 pandemic.

Advice

Reach out to people who you'd like to work with and take initiative to ask for continuing work, especially following a terminal position like LU Summer Research. This was my second summer working with Dr. Hilt, and I'm beyond grateful for the opportunities it's afforded me. But a lot of it was that after that first summer, I took initiative to ask if I could continue working in the lab during the school year, which lead to developing a stronger relationship with Dr. Hilt and assuring that I'd be able to work with her the following summer.

Research Intern

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

What I liked was the cooperative and communicative atmosphere even though it was a remote position. I got to share and discuss ideas with Dr. Sara Quandt about our research on Latinx Migrant Farmworkers, becoming involved in the project instead of just watching the process. This internship gave me a great outlook as to what a job in public heath research would look like and what is expected of me as a researcher.

What I wish was different

Advice

My one piece of advice would be don’t be afraid to share your ideas and opinions about whatever you’re researching. It can be into imaging when you are talking to a well established researcher, but just keep in mind that new eyes are always valuable.

Summer Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved the engaging science I was working with every day. I was able to learn current methodology, and directly apply it. I was also able to improve my problem solving skills as I applied them to the obstacles I faced over the summer.

What I wish was different

Advice

It is important to understand your interest in research when applying for a summer research position. Talking with the professor informally about their work is a great way to understand if their lab is the right fit for you.
