External Affairs Intern

June - August 2018 • La Crosse, WI

What I liked

I liked the variety of work that I did. I wrote memos on federal hearings, designed a newsletter, did research, provided a daily new update, made phone calls to other counties' health departments, etc. I was able to practice different work tasks that I will need to do in the future.

What I wish was different

Considering one of my majors is in Women's Studies I wish I had been able to explore some more intersectional aspects of health care.

Advice

Don't throw this internship out as an option because you don't know anything about health care or don't think you want to work in health care. I was in the same mindset at first, but I really loved interning at Gundersen. It is a great place to work at and everyone is very friendly. They give you a ton of responsibility so you get some actual professional experience. Also, this internship opened my eyes to how huge the world of health care is in terms of policy and the policies to explore are endless. I think anyone could find something fascinating in health care policy no matter their interests.

Summer Research Fellow

May - August 2019 • La Crosse, WI

What I liked

While the goal of the position was to conduct a research study, I enjoyed the additional perks that came along with it. Even in a three month time period there was plenty of time to invest in health-related conferences or events that were offered to all of the employees. We sat in on discussions about adverse childhood experiences (ACE's), surgical morbidity and mortality, and even got to do things like surgery simulations in Gundersen's simulation lab. The greatest advantage to this position is in the amount of shadowing hours that we were offered. I spent time shadowing nearly every health profession and even some that don't deal with direct patient contact. These experiences helped to reinforce that I am on the correct career path and I won't regret looking into other career paths later down the road.

What I wish was different

They have been running this program since before I was born and therefore have it set up like a well-oiled machine. Our research mentors knew exactly who to connect us with once they discovered our professional goals and made sure we struck a solid balance between work, shadowing, and learning. Therefore I don't have any suggestions for what could be different.

Advice

This position is definitely built for pre-health students although that should not be limited to pre-med only. Remember that there are plenty of positions through medical research, statistics, nursing, accounting, and the list goes on. I am a pre-dental student and a few of the other summer fellows were on track to become interpreters, physician assistants, nurses, and many others. You will have the opportunity to shadow any profession in the medical field regardless of whether or not the position is patient related. In summary, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn about both conventional and unconventional professions in the field of health care while gaining connections and making money.
