Marketing & Communications Intern

Job Summary: 

The Marketing & Communications Intern is responsible for learning and aiding in the integrated marketing and communications strategy for Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast. This position is responsible for aiding and supporting the disseminating of information about Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast and the programs and services they provide to food companies and agricultural businesses interested in exporting. Builds and maintains the visibility and image of the organizations. Maintains a positive work atmosphere by performing and communicating in a manner that gets along with members, clients, co-workers and supervisors. Duties/Responsibilities (Essential Functions): 

Assists Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast staff with implementing, creating, designing, and analyzing Marketing and Communications activities (including social media content creation, flyer creation, website updating, press release reviewing/editing, data analytics, giveaway item tracking and inventorying, email marketing development and tracking, copyediting, design work). More specifically the position involves: 

Assist in the development and execution of marketing campaigns across multiple channels, including social media, email, and digital advertising.  

Contribute to content creation efforts, including writing copy for promotional materials, blog posts, and social media posts.  

Support the maintenance and growth of our social media presence through regular posting, engagement, and community management.  

Inventory giveaway items in Food Export-Northeast office. 

Help write/draft Success Stories (up to 3). 

Provide administrative support to the Marketing and Communications Team, including organizing files, scheduling meetings, and managing correspondence.  

Provide communications-related support to the International Marketing Program, Branded, and Liaisons Teams as needed.

Through this internship, students will have the opportunity to develop: 

Experience working in an office environment, familiarity with typical skills such as filing, scanning & copying, attending staff meetings, professional communication via phone, email, and face to face interaction 

Experience working across and prioritizing tasks from multiple projects. Intern will work with 1 direct supervisor and will receive training and mentorship from all members of the Marketing and Communications team and other coworkers. The Food Export office staff is very open to questions, shadowing phone calls and tasks, and tries to promote the individual skills of each intern by developing projects that the intern is interested in and can see through from start to finish. 

An understanding of marketing and communications tactics utilized by a nonprofit organization. 

Education and experience on different platforms used in marketing and communications, including email distribution, content creation, social media post scheduling, and more. 

Insight into various facets of marketing strategy and communications management. 

An understanding of the interaction between state governments, regional trade groups, and US food/agriculture exports. 

An understanding of the Market Access Program funding provided by the USDA.

Technical Skills: 

•  Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. 

•  Familiar with WordPress. 

•  Familiar with Canva or other graphic design software. 

•  Experience with social media, email marketing and related analytics preferred. 

 Education and Experience: 

• Nearing completion of bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field required.

Physical Requirements: 

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
