Community Garden Fellow - Groundwork MKE - SEJ Program

Groundwork Milwaukee is seeking a Community Garden Fellow to support Milwaukee community gardens and green space through assisting in organizing and leading workdays that provide garden maintenance [includes but not limited to: weeding, planting, mowing, building & maintaining raised beds] with Groundwork Milwaukee staff and volunteers. Fellows will begin their time at Groundwork learning alongside volunteers and over weeks will take on responsibilities to lead tasks under the supervision of staff. Through their work, fellows will also learn urban agriculture skills and connect their work in the field with broader topics in urban environmentalism.

In addition to workday responsibilities, community garden fellows will provide additional capacity to Groundwork Milwaukee through other project support work which will ultimately be determined by Groundwork Milwaukee’s needs & the interests of the student. These capacity-building assignments could be, but are not limited to: organizing community events in gardens, assisting with volunteer outreach, or assisting with record keeping & data collection.

The Milwaukee Grows Garden Network is a constellation of more than 80 active community gardens facilitated by Groundwork Milwaukee. Each of these gardens has been started and maintained by ambitious residents with a desire to activate unused space in their neighborhoods. Most of the gardens are just that, gardens, with fresh produce growing in raised garden beds while others serve as recreational greenspace and still others function as full-scale farms. Groundwork collaborates with gardeners to provide legal and safe access to city-owned vacant space, materials and labor for garden builds and maintenance, and planning and training of health-based educational and recreational programming in the gardens. For more information, visitwww.groundworkmke.org/garden-network.

Ideal applicants for this position will have an interest in environmental justice, urban agriculture, and/or community organizing and feel enthusiastic about working outside. No previous experience is required.
