Summer Intern - Community Action for Healthy Living (SEJ Program)

Community Action for Healthy Living, Inc. (CAHL) is a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy lifestyles. We use community education, local and statewide policy and our member’s expertise to reduce the number of people harmed by tobacco and substance misuse. CAHL partners with students, community organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and law enforcement agencies to address substance misuse and tobacco-related issues.

CAHL brings over 20 years of experience in youth prevention work. A recipient of Wisconsin State Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) funding since 2001, CAHL has been integral in local successes such as: local and statewide smoke free air law enactment, reducing youth tobacco product access, and building youth advocates.
About the Internship In support of our prevention efforts across the CAHL service area, the intern will assist CAHL staff to achieve our mission. This may include one or more of the following responsibilities, depending upon an intern's interest and experience level:
• Conduct community assessments of health and/or policy priority areas e.g., review school policies on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; review and analyze municipal smoke-free air ordinances.
• Conduct environmental scans to assess the community-level availability of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
• Develop an outreach and engagement plan for community partnerships to support our youth coalition programming.
• Collaborate with youth coalition members to plan and execute a youth coalition recruitment event, including marketing and communications, community outreach, relationship building and meeting coordination.
• Collaborate with local law enforcement and retailers to conduct Wisconsin Wins compliance checks.
• Assist with community outreach, including but not limited to, youth substance use prevention campaigns, health fairs, business expos, parades and other community events to build awareness and provide prevention messaging.

Hybrid in the Fox Cities/Appleton, WI area
 

Target Start

June 2025


Time Commitment: 

300 total hours. Normal work hours are 8 AM-4:30 PM, Monday-Friday, but some evenings and weekends will be required.

About You
Qualifications/Competencies and Other Requirements:
• Keen interest in public health, especially policy or community health interventions
• Experience with research and analysis
• Experience building relationships within communities
• High attention to detail
• Strong writing skills
• Effective time-management
• Self-motivation and personal discipline
• Valid driver's license highly preferred

Compensation:
This internship is part of the Lawrence University Social & Environmental Justice Cohort, which provides an opportunity for Lawrentians to explore social and environmental justice impact careers, gain professional experience, and develop as leaders. Students complete a full-time summer 2025 internship with an identified social and/or environmental justice impact organization in Milwaukee or Appleton, while participating in ongoing reflection with fellow students, Professor Jason Brozek, the Career Center, community leaders and alumni.  Students may apply for as many positions as they are qualified for and interested in. Each student in the SEJ program will receive a $5k stipend to help cover housing and transportation costs and living expenses.
