Intern Program:

The paid Summer Internship Program is an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a full-time BNSF employee. As an intern at BNSF, you’ll be given real-life, impactful assignments that will put your skills and education into practice. Your summer project will combine classroom experience and real-life business situations to provide value-added work to BNSF. The program is designed to identify students who will be hired by BNSF as full-time Management Trainees after they graduate. During your summer internship, you will get the chance to network with peers, our Business Resource Groups, and Senior Leaders throughout the BNSF network.

Number of Positions: 15 

Salary: $4,781 per month

RELOCATION: 

  • SUMMER RELOCATION WILL BE REQUIRED. A candidate can be relocated to any location across the BNSF system
  • An ideal candidate should be very flexible regarding location
  • Work assignment could place an Intern anywhere on BNSF's 32,500-mile system

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This challenging program offers students the opportunity to learn about the working logistics of this fast-paced railroad. The summer will be spent in an assigned mechanical facility which could be anywhere on BNSF's 32,500-mile system. The Mechanical Department is responsible for maintaining the locomotives and freight cars that operate on BNSF’s network. During this assignment, the intern will shadow mechanical supervisors and craft employees; work on projects; and assist in supervising, monitoring, and inspecting the maintenance and repair of locomotives and freight cars. This role does not involve the design of railcars, locomotives, or other equipment. 

Examples could include, but are not limited to: 

  • Observe, prepare, and conduct job safety briefings with employees
  • Assist in ensuring labor and equipment is positioned to inspect, test, and repair equipment to meet the needs of the daily plan
  • Lead process improvement initiatives with local workforce

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Indoors and outdoors on a regular basis
  • The environment requires personal protective equipment (i.e., hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest, and gloves) provided by BNSF
  • Work around heavy and moving machinery
  • Capable of working in a shop or field environment, climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces safely, and walking on elevated grated surfaces

HOURS OF WORK: 

  • Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Schedule could involve nights, weekends, and holidays as BNSF is a 24 x 7 work environment

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT 

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future
  • Have a valid Driver’s License
  • Able to work in a 24/7 environment and as required
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet)
  • Capable of working in a shop, terminal, or field environment, climbing on ladders, and walking on uneven surfaces safely
  • Able to travel as the business requires (Travel could be 10%-90% depending on the summer assignment)
  • Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, for the summer, and travel to other locations as required
  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree from an accredited university, and will complete degree no earlier than Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Fall 2025, Spring 2026, or Fall 2026.
  • Have or anticipate to have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-engineering degree
  • Have four (4) years or less of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held pursuing a degree in high school and/or college

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering, Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Automotive, Business, Technical, OR a similar degree program
