The Urban Ecology Center hires nearly 30 people annually for our Green Career Pathways summer employment & internship experience. Our model of creating neighborhood-based environmental education centers energizes urban public natural areas. Located in vibrant public green spaces in Milwaukee, our fast-growing organization serves over 200,000 people of all ages annually. Our Green Career Pathways efforts are providing people with an immersive green career experience while having a significant impact on our mission. 
The UEC’s Volunteer Department will hire (1) Volunteer Program intern for the summer of 2023.  Application review will begin on February 27th; candidates are encouraged to apply by that date. The interview cycle should conclude no later than March 27th. 
Position Summary: The goal of this full-time, seasonal position is to develop skills to become environmentally responsible mentors for the urban Milwaukee community. This position will experience the “nuts and bolts” of a dynamic, fast-growing nonprofit organization while focusing on ensuring the Urban Ecology Center programs and operations have adequate volunteer support. This position location will vary between Riverside Park, Menomonee Valley and Washington Park branches. 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Responsibilities
  • Works closely with the Volunteer Program Manager to give orientations (presentation, tour, and assistance in filling out applications)
  • Processes volunteer applications (including background and reference checks), assists in matching talents to tasks, and communicates with applicants by phone and email in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Enters and updates constituent information in the Volgistics database (including hour log records and group information), and completes yearly volunteer database maintenance
  • Helps with coordination and supervision of volunteers (including individual volunteers and service groups)
  • Supports summer events and programs that require volunteers 
Secondary Responsibilities 
  • Supports outreach and corporate/ community partner relationship building in the neighborhoods we serve
  • Participates in Service Group projects and other Volunteer Opportunities to engage the community and capture photos and quotes from participants
  • Help steward and appreciate volunteers during the summer 
OUR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT & INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
  • Our summer employment term runs from June 5 to August 25, 2023. Interns are paid an $1,080 bi-weekly (pre-tax) for this full-time (up to 40 hours/week opportunity, and allotted 3 days (24 hours) of PTO for planned vacation or sick days.
  • You will attend training for the first two weeks of your experience, with opportunities for further learning & development throughout the summer. We host both a Summer Kickoff event and an End of Summer Celebration.
  • As a member of the Volunteer team, You will be managed by the Volunteer Program Manager and work collaboratively with the Volunteer Coordinator, Neighborhood Engagement, Land Stewardship, Research and Community Science, and Facilities staff. 
  • You may have the opportunity to earn additional money by working as an attendant at our events (weddings, rentals, other parties, etc).

  • Data management skills (Excel) required
  • Database experience (Volgistics or Altru) preferred
Experience, Education, and Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Additional coursework related to customer service, non-profits, or general administration is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of volunteer experience is preferred. 
  • Conversational Spanish speaking ability is preferred. 
WORKING CONDITIONS, LOCATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Condition & Location: Open office workspace with an active team atmosphere. Using shared workspaces at all three UEC locations. 
  • Physical Requirements: Sitting for prolonged periods, typing on a computer keyboard, lifting objects of 25 pounds or less, Standing, walking, bending 
  • Equipment Used: Computer equipment, Google software, CRM software
  • Schedule: Standard business hours with frequent evening and weekend events
