GreenSpace Steward Program Team Lead - Groundwork Milwaukee (SEJ)

Greenspace Steward Team Leaders will support Milwaukee community gardens and greenspace through assisting in organizing and leading workdays that provide garden maintenance [includes but not limited to: weeding, mowing, building & maintaining raised beds] with Groundwork Milwaukee staff and volunteers. Team leaders will begin their time at Groundwork learning alongside volunteers and over weeks will take on responsibilities to lead tasks under the supervision of staff. Team leaders will also learn urban agriculture skills in skills-based workshops and connect their work in the field with broader topics in urban environmentalism through cohort style learning discussions with volunteers.

In addition to workday responsibilities, team leaders will provide additional capacity to Groundwork Milwaukee through a variety of possible activities which will ultimately be determined by Groundwork Milwaukee’s needs & the interests of the student. These capacity-building assignments could be, but are not limited to: organizing community events in gardens, assisting with volunteer outreach, or assisting with record keeping & data collection.

Ideal applicants for this position will have an interest in environmental justice, urban agriculture, and/or community organizing and feel enthusiastic about working outside. No previous experience is required.

This internship is part of the Lawrence University Social & Environmental Justice Cohort, which provides an opportunity for Lawrentians to explore social and environmental justice impact careers, gain professional experience, and develop as leaders. Students complete a full-time summer 2022 internship with an identified social and/or environmental justice impact organization in Milwaukee or Appleton, while participating in ongoing reflection with fellow students, Professor Jason Brozek, the Career Center, community leaders and alumni.  For more details and to apply, please click here.
