Position Overview
The Fresh Water Action Intern plays a key role in supporting Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s advocacy and community engagement efforts. This position focuses on communicating environmental and policy priorities in clear, accessible ways that reflect community needs and concerns.
Interns will assist with outreach, educational materials, and communications campaigns that encourage public participation and environmental action. Projects may include print and digital materials, social media content, and event support.
Key Responsibilities
- Support community engagement and outreach related to advocacy priorities
- Draft and format communications materials, including:
- Fact sheets
- Presentations
- Public education resources
- Social media series and campaign assets
- Work with the Community Outreach Coordinator to incorporate community voices and lived experiences into advocacy efforts
- Assist with organizing efforts related to legal and policy initiatives
- Represent Milwaukee Riverkeeper at community events
- Support growth of the organization’s membership and volunteer base
- Take on additional duties as needed based on organizational priorities and intern strengths
Qualifications
- Interest in or willingness to learn about environmental, legal, and technical issues
- Experience or interest in community organizing and outreach
- Interest or experience creating educational or promotional materials
- Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube); video production/editing is a plus
- Ability to read and interpret federal and state policies (or willingness to learn)
- Experience or interest in working with diverse communities
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Proficiency with basic software (Microsoft Word, Excel)
- Commitment to environmental protection and community engagement
- Willingness to be flexible and grow with the organization
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds
- Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

Compensation:
This internship is part of the Lawrence University Social & Environmental Justice Cohort, which provides an opportunity for Lawrentians to explore social and environmental justice impact careers, gain professional experience, and develop as leaders. Students complete a full-time summer 2026 internship with an identified social and/or environmental justice impact organization in Milwaukee or Appleton, while participating in ongoing reflection with fellow students, Professor Jason Brozek, the Career Center, community leaders and alumni. Students may apply for as many positions as they are qualified for and interested in. Each student in the SEJ program will receive a $5k stipend to help cover housing and transportation costs and living expenses.
